How to Choose the Right Cable Cutter for Your Next Job

A cable cutter is one of those tools that rarely gets attention until the day you need it. Choosing the wrong one can mean crushed strands, damaged insulation, or a blade that dulls after a dozen cuts. This short guide covers the main points to check before you buy.

Match the cutter to the material

Not all cable is the same. Copper and aluminium power cable, steel wire rope, and multi-core flexible cable each need a different blade geometry. A ratchet cutter with a hardened, straight-edged blade handles solid copper cleanly, while a shear-type head is a better match for fine-stranded flexible cable because it slices rather than crushes.

Check the cutting capacity

Every cutter is rated for a maximum diameter, and that rating assumes the hardest material it is designed for. If you regularly cut 300 mm2 cable, do not buy a tool rated at exactly 300 mm2. Working at the top of a tool range accelerates wear and increases the effort needed on every cut.

Ratchet or one-hand operation

  • Ratchet cutters multiply your hand force over several strokes. They are the right choice for large diameters and for anyone working overhead.
  • One-hand cutters are faster for small diameters and awkward positions, but they demand more grip strength.

Blade material and service life

Look for chrome-vanadium or high-carbon steel blades with a properly hardened cutting edge. A replaceable blade saves the whole tool from the bin and is usually worth the small extra cost.

Finally, check the handles. Insulated, non-slip grips protect your hands and, on rated tools, provide protection against accidental contact with live conductors.
